Cyprus: An Island of Contrasts

Ancient monasteries, revered icons and spa time — immerse yourself in the best of the region from your remote mountain hideaway on Cyprus.

About Your Trip

Visit rural Cyprus and you’ll find a study in contrasts — from quaint farmhouses and a laidback mountain village to mighty UNESCO-protected landmarks and a lavish monastery set in the middle of a forest.

You’ll get a real sense of the area’s rich history starting with your 1st outing. From your base in Kalopanayiotis, embark on a guided walking tour, and stop at 2 UNESCO-protected sites. The monastery of Agios Ioannis Lampadistis (St. John the Illuminator) is known for painted murals depicting Byzantine civilization, and 12th-century Theoskepasti Chapel boasts a giant oak tree whose branches "embraced" it, shielding it from the wandering eyes of pirates and looters. At the Byzantine Museum, a former schoolhouse, take in exhibits that include 16th-century icons. Along the way, marvel at one of the natural sulphur springs purported to have healing qualities. Finally, head to the Venetian bridge, constructed in the 16th century in the traditional stone masonry of the time.

Travel toward Paphos forest for a glimpse into one of the most coveted religious sites in Cyprus. Set high atop a mountain peak is 11th-century Kykkos Monastery , a popular tourist destination and home to a significant icon of the Virgin Mary painted by St. Luke. Afterward, step into the Museum of Kykkos Monastery that holds a collection of valuable religious artifacts. At the tourist pavilion , it’s time to shop, grab a bite or relax with a coffee. End the day at Throni Tis Panayias (Throne of Virgin Mary), the tomb of Archbishop Makarios III, the president of Cyprus in 1959.

What we love:
• The monastery of Agios Ioannis Lampadistis and Theoskepasti Chapel are part of a series of 10 churches and monasteries that make up the UNESCO World Heritage site of Painted Churches in the Troodos Region.
• Your complimentary 1-day entry to your hotel’s myrianthousa spa offers a variety of ways to relax. Soak in the sulphur-spring water that’s said to have natural healing properties.
• Typical cuisine in Cyprus includes mezedes. Similar to Spanish tapas, it features small plates filled with traditional food such as dips, cheeses, meats, vegetables and more!

Destination

The charming village of Kalopanayiotis is tucked away in the Troodos mountains on the island of Cyprus. Set along the Setrachos river and within a valley surrounded by dense forest, it's far from city crowds. Yet, those who are in the know visit this ancient town for its natural sulphur springs — said to have therapeutic properties — and Byzantine churches filled with remarkable murals. Its seemingly untouched and timeless qualities have made this village the perfect backdrop for the 2016 dramatic movie "A Boy on the Bridge" that’s set in the 1980s.
